You think of vitamin C and what comes to mind... a big juicy orange? Did you ever consider a bowl of broccoli? One serving has twice your recommended daily allowance and it does more than ward off a cold. New research links vitamin C to lower blood pressure in healthy young adults.
The study, published in Nutrition Journal, looked at 242 women between the ages of 18 and 21. During a decade-long follow-up, researchers found that those women with higher blood levels of vitamin C had consistently lower blood pressures. Blood pressures were up to 5 points lower systolic (top number), and 6 points lower diastolic (bottom number) . Researchers say that lower blood pressure in young adults could lead to lower blood pressure and fewer heart problems as we age.
So, don't just go for vitamin C when you've got the sniffles. Add foods rich in vitamin C it to your diet everyday for better blood pressure and heart health. You'll find vitamin C in dark green veggies too, and quick, gentle cooking – or none at all! – helps you hold on to more of it.
